At age 87, of Castle Shannon, Katherine passed away peacefully in Bradenton, FL, with her devoted daughter and son-in-law by her side. Katherine was the beloved wife of nearly 50 years to the late Nicholas Sopko; loving mother to Susan (Keith) Fisher, Janet Furtney, and the late James (Judith survives) Sopko; dear grandmother of Christine Collier, Elise Navarro, Andrew Sopko, and Aleksandr Furtney; great-grandmother of Lillian and Garrett Collier, Natalya Navarro, and Emma Furtney; daughter of the late Vera (Lasko) and Andrew Kearns and the late Christopher Painter; sister of Elva Collins, Lorraine Wahl, Paul and Michael Kearns, and the late Andrew, Ronald, and Richard Kearns. During her lifetime, she was referred to as "Babe" by most family members, while the majority of her friends and neighbors called her "Kay." Katherine had been staying in Bradenton, FL, for the past year, spending time with her daughter, Susan, and her son-in-law, Keith, at their residence, with the intention of living with them full time in the near future. She had such an amazing artistic talent, which she utilized in earlier years with her 5-yr tenure at Pittsburgh Merchantile, in the Marketing/Advertising Dept for women's fashions in Pittsburgh, PA. Katherine was very active as a representative for Avon products for over 30 years, and was recognized on several occasions for meeting/exceeding her sales goals. She took tremendous pride in her beautiful home with a special passion for gardening, as her yard was always immaculate and attractive. Katherine loved animals, with special devotion to the family pets (dogs). Family and friends will be received on Wednesday and Thursday, December 6th and 7th, from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236. A Funeral Service of Russian Orthodox faith will be held on Friday, December 8th, at 11:30 AM, in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Park.
